Why Mental Health Matters in Construction

Construction has one of the highest suicide rates of any industry in the U.S.—four times the national average. Stress, isolation, demanding schedules, and a tough-it-out culture all contribute to mental health challenges that too often go unspoken.

When companies prioritize mental wellness:

  • Workers are safer, more focused, and more productive
  • Teams experience reduced absenteeism and turnover
  • The workplace becomes a space of respect, trust, and support

Together, we can reduce the stigma and create environments where every worker feels seen, supported, and safe.

At Allied Construction Industries (ACI), we believe that safety is more than PPE and protocols—it’s also about people. That’s why mental health and wellness are central to building a stronger, safer, and more resilient construction industry.

That’s also why ACI formed the Mental Health & Wellness Committee that addresses the growing need for mental health awareness and supports the needs of our member companies. This committee brings together industry leaders, advocates, and experts who are committed to changing the culture of construction—from one of silence and stigma to one of support and openness.

ACI is the Cincinnati Division of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). AGC’s Contractor Resources page on Mental Health & Suicide Prevention offers a powerful collection of practical tools — from toolbox talks and posters to best-practice guides and full sample programs — designed specifically for the construction industry. It’s a one-stop source to help companies foster a culture of care, reduce stigma, and make mental wellness a core part of workplace safety. Explore AGC resources here.
